The first Black College Con is here, and it’s about time.

The Black Collegiate Gaming Association (BCGA) released the event to help marginalized students at historically Black universities and colleges get connected.

The BCGA holds an event connecting Black students to white male-dominated industries like gaming, entertainment, and technology.

A Black woman founded the BCGA and currently heads it, making the BCGA the only brand of its kind.

Keshia Walker, who has over two decades of professional experience in marketing and PR, founded BCGA in 2020.

Walker formed BCGA to help women and the Black community in a field that doesn’t take them seriously.

Since its formation, the BCGA has developed workforce training, networking opportunities, and tournaments that connect students from different backgrounds.

The Black College Con also helps tech enthusiasts and aspiring gamers get exposure and showcase their skills to potential employers.

The event follows the theme, “Black in Unity,” linking the industry’s major game-changers to talented Black techies.

The summit kicked off on February 18 at North Carolina Central University, with additional events until March 11.

Before the BCGA, no pipeline existed for Black youths in the gaming industry.

The tech industry is growing at an accelerated rate, and the Black College Con is positioning Black youths to be part of it.

To make the event a success, the BCGA has teamed up with significant players in the industry, like ADT and PlayStation, and streams on the gamer-centric Twitch platform.

The college con has free registration, and the BCGA encourages attendees and supporters to promote the event using #BCC23 or #BlackCollegeCon2023.

Hopefully, the Black College Con is the first of many tech-focused events targeting the Black community this year.

This is a rapidly-growing area with space for anyone to join and flourish.
