If you’ve been anywhere on the internet in the last couple of days, you may have seen a clip of Ariana DeBose cutting up at the BAFTA Film Awards. And let’s be clear, it wasn’t anything bad! The actress and singer busted out a cute rap honoring some of the talented and accomplished women in attendance
However, many people on social media thought the moment was cringeworthy and started sharing the video, attaching negative comments and critique to each post and tweet. The criticism was so bad, DeBose ended up temporarily deactivating all of her social media accounts.
In her absence, fans took it upon themselves to put a positive spin on the viral moment by pointing out that Ariana gave a loveable shoutout to Angela Bassett by opening her award show rap with, “Angela Bassett did a thing!” Sparking memes, well-intentioned laughs, and of course the queen Angela Bassett checking in on Ariana herself!
“I DM’d her last night. I did. It was beautiful,” Bassett told Variety senior entertainment writer Angelique Jackson on the red carpet at the NAACP Image Awards on Saturday evening. “I just wanted to make sure she was okay because, you know, it’s a lot of attention. And she is A-Okay.”
